How often should I paint the exterior of my house?

Stained and/or clear finished timber needs to be refinished every 2 to 5 years. Not only does this keep your home looking fresh and updated it will also protect the structure of the house, adding longevity to your home and saving you money in the long run.
If you leave the exterior of your home without being painted for too long, the paint will start to break down and begin to flake, fade and crack. This can be detrimental to the structure of your house as it leaves your home more susceptible to the weather elements, especially the extreme heat and storms we experience in summer.
Things to look out for when deciding whether you need to repaint the outside of your home:
- When peeling and cracking on window trim becomes visible from a distance, it’s a sign you should have repainted your trim last year or the year before and definitely shouldn’t put it off again until next year.
- If you have timber cladding, you should inspect it closely every year or two. Pay particular attention to places where timber overlaps or butts into other materials. Look for signs of moisture, infestation or fungus in these areas.
- More weather-resistant cladding won’t need repainting as often as timber, but don’t neglect fascia’s, window trim, doors and other timber components.
How to keep your house exterior looking greater for longer?
To keep your home in tip-top condition is to regularly and thoroughly wash down the outside, we recommend that this is done at least once every two years. Doing this will help to prevent dust, dirt and insects especially acidic spiderwebs from eating into the paint which then causes the paint to deteriorate faster than it ordinarily would if it was clean.
A good wash can add value to your home not only in protection but in making the outside look renewed. The team at Prestige Paint & Restoration is equipped to assist you should you require your home to be washed.
The quality of workmanship and paint will make a big difference to the longevity of your exterior paint job. If you’re repainting, preparing the surface can take longer than the actual painting if you want the paint to last. Skimping on the cost of your paint could end up being more expensive in the long run than using good quality primers and paints.
